The safety maxim
Safety, efficiency and cost-effectiveness are the three basic requirements of skyguide which are specified in its mandate from the Swiss government.

Safety policy
As a responsible air navigation service provider, skyguide and all its subsidiaries are committed to ensuring the highest, practicable level of safety. The Safety Policy of skyguide states its intention to minimise its contribution to safety risks, while ensuring safety consideration has the priority in all its business activities.
Safety management
The Safety Management System (SMS) of skyguide is considered an integral part of its business management process. Its SMS is designed to be practical and efficient in meeting skyguide's specific business needs, whilst ensuring it meets its regulatory obligations.
Safety strategy
The aviation industry is prone to rapid technological advancement as well as other political, environmental and financial pressures. To ensure that skyguide is able to meet these, and other challenges, skyguide has developed a Safety Strategy. This strategy will enable skyguide to maintain the desired level of safety and ensure its continued ability to support the ever-changing global environment.
Further information
- ESARR. The Eurocontrol Safety Regulatory Requirements (ESARR) were developed by Eurocontrol for the safety of air navigation. They are valid for all Eurocontrol member states, including Switzerland.
- Safety nets. Various technical systems are used - aboard aircraft for pilots and on the ground for air traffic controllers - to alleviate potential consequences of human error. These “safety nets” are designed to alert pilots and controllers in good time to potentially hazardous situations.
- NLR's study into Swiss aviation. In 2003, the Dutch National Aerospace Laboratory (NLR) conducted a study into the safety of aviation in Switzerland. A post implementation audit, the report of which was published in January 2007, has measured the progress realised since then.
