The 2011 business year: an outstanding performance through consistent cost control, revenue gains and operational improvements

Skyguide reports an operating surplus of CHF 27.97 million for 2011 (compared to an operating deficit of CHF 11.69 million for the previous year). The favourable operating result was achieved through consistent cost control and additional revenues, and despite adverse currency movements. Following changes to the corresponding legal parameters, 2011 saw skyguide receive its first-ever compensation for the services it provides at regional airports and in the adjoining airspace of neighbouring countries delegated to its control, for which it had previously received noor inadequate remuneration. As a result of the revised financing arrangements, skyguide will be able to eliminate its current accumulated deficit in the next few years. In operational terms, too, the work and development effected over the past years have placed the company in a strong and viable position. More

Geneva, 6 March 2012. Skyguide has been awarded a distinction for its introduction of new approach procedures based on data provided by EGNOS, the European Satellite Based Augmentation System. 2011 first-half performance: Good punctuality levels despite a significant increase in traffic volume

Skyguide continues to make progress in digitising the workstations of its air traffic controllers to the extent that all the information on the various flights under their management can be presented directly on their radar screens. In the latest move in this direction, Switzerland’s air navigation service provider has adopted a new system for its Zurich Area Control Centre in Wangen (near Dübendorf) which enables controllers to electronically process the clearances they issue to aircraft to fly at a particular flight level. The new system came into operation in the night of 17 to 18 May.

25th anniversary of the control tower in Zurich

Exactly 25 years ago, during the night of 28 to 29 April 1986, the current control tower at Zurich airport came into operation for the first time. It is the third building of its kind on the site since air traffic was moved from Dübendorf to Zurich Kloten in the 1940s. Nowadays, the air traffic controllers in the tower monitor an average of 700 arrivals and departures every day, which is almost 50 percent more than 25 years ago.

Skyguide reports an overall net surplus of CHF 6.1 million for 2010, an increase on the CHF 2.59 million of 2009. The operating result for 2010 amounted to CHF -11.69 million, a decline on the CHF -9.14 million of the prior year that was still within budgeted parameters thanks to continuous cost economies and despite a number of extraordinary events which impacted ad-versely on earnings. The red-ink nature of the operating result is still due to the well-known structural underfunding of the services provided by skyguide at re-gional aerodromes and in the adjacent airspace of neighbouring countries dele-gated to its control. From 2011 onwards, following changes to the corresponding legal parameters, the company should be able to gradually eliminate the accumu-lated deficit here over the next few years. More

Skyguide achieves further punctuality record: 96% of all flights handled on time in 2010

Skyguide saw only a small 0.8% increase in the total number of flights it handled last year, which rose from the 1.15 million of 2009 to 1.16 million. Skyguide is to raise the unit rate for its route charges by 4.9% with effect from 1 January 2011. The increase has been prompted by a decline in en-route air traffic volumes, which is itself a product of the recent economic crisis. The approach charges will remain unchanged. Despite suffering sizeable revenue declines, Switzerland’s air navigation service provider has kept its charges stable over the past few years. But skyguide will only be partially able to offset the revenue shortfall expected for 2011 through further cost economies. More

Skyguide managed and monitored 555 603 civil flights in its airspace in the first six months of 2010, some 1.0% fewer than in the same period last year. The new system, which came into operation on 31 May and whose stabilisation phase of nearly two weeks has just ended up successfully, is already in use at Geneva Airport, where it was introduced last December. Skyguide strengthened its position in 2009 in what proved a difficult year in economic terms. The general recession prompted a decline of around 7.2 per cent in total air traffic volume, compared to the prior year. But by taking prompt corrective action, skyguide was able to offset the corresponding revenue decline. As a result of these actions, the CHF 9.14 million operating loss sustained for the 2009 business year was smaller than the budgeted deficit of CHF 12.01 million. Skyguide still sustained a loss for the year, however. The redink operating result continues to reflect the current cost underrecovery for the company’s services at regional aerodromes and for the services provided in the adjoining airspace of neighbouring countries delegated to its control.
