The new charges will apply to all flights by aircraft of over five tonnes, except visual flight rules (VFR) training flights conducted with aircraft of up to 30 tonnes. Cleared for takeoff: a new class of future air traffic controllers begin their skyguide training

The last of the three classes which comprise skyguide’s annual intake of would-be air traffic controllers began their training today. The 19 trainees, who are drawn from throughout Switzerland and from other countries, too, have already passed the rigorous controller selection and are now embarking on the training itself, which will take around two-and-a-half years. Next year’s biennial gathering for the flight inspection world. The 17th International Flight Inspection Symposium (IFIS) will be held in Braunschweig, Germany from Monday 4 to Friday 8 June 2012. The biennial symposium is a broad-based gathering of the global flight inspection community which attracts more than 300 decision-makers from air navigation service providers (ANSPs), flight inspection companies, manufacturers and supervisory authorities drawn from some 40 countries for a presentation of the latest technologies, products and procedures and a discussion and exchange on current industry trends. 2011 first-half performance: Good punctuality levels despite a significant increase in traffic volume

Skyguide managed 587,030 flights in the first half of 2011, a 5.7 percent increase on the same period last year. The steps taken to increase system capacity also enabled skyguide to achieve an excellent performance in terms of punctuality for the period: 92.6 percent of all flights were handled on time.

Aircraft dumps fuel over Jura

Skyguide takes a further step towards a digital workstation: flight level clearances now electronically processed

Skyguide continues to make progress in digitising the workstations of its air traffic controllers to the extent that all the information on the various flights under their management can be presented directly on their radar screens. In the latest move in this direction, Switzerland’s air navigation service provider has adopted a new system for its Zurich Area Control Centre in Wangen (near Dübendorf) which enables controllers to electronically process the clearances they issue to aircraft to fly at a particular flight level. 25th anniversary of the control tower in Zurich

Exactly 25 years ago, during the night of 28 to 29 April 1986, the current control tower at Zurich airport came into operation for the first time. It is the third building of its kind on the site since air traffic was moved from Dübendorf to Zurich Kloten in the 1940s. Nowadays, the air traffic controllers in the tower monitor an average of 700 arrivals and departures every day, which is almost 50 percent more than 25 years ago.

Skyguide in 2010: still on course despite exceptional developments

Skyguide reports an overall net surplus of CHF 6.1 million for 2010, an increase on the CHF 2.59 million of 2009. The operating result for 2010 amounted to CHF -11.69 million, a decline on the CHF -9.14 million of the prior year that was still within budgeted parameters thanks to continuous cost economies and despite a number of extraordinary events which impacted ad-versely on earnings. The red-ink nature of the operating result is still due to the well-known structural underfunding of the services provided by skyguide at re-gional aerodromes and in the adjacent airspace of neighbouring countries dele-gated to its control. From 2011 onwards, following changes to the corresponding legal parameters, the company should be able to gradually eliminate the accumu-lated deficit here over the next few years. Skyguide achieves further punctuality record: 96% of all flights handled on time in 2010

Skyguide saw only a small 0.8% increase in the total number of flights it handled last year, which rose from the 1.15 million of 2009 to 1.16 million. On the punctuality front, Switzerland’s air navigation service provider further improved its annual performance: 96% of all daily flight volumes were handled without delays.

Skyguide scores highly in its 2010 Client Satisfaction Survey

In the company’s latest Client Satisfaction Survey, 88% of respondents in the three key customer segments of airlines, air force and general aviation are either “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with Switzerland’s air navigation service provider. Skyguide to adjust route charges for 2011

Skyguide is to raise the unit rate for its route charges by 4.9% with effect from 1 January 2011. The increase has been prompted by a decline in en-route air traffic volumes, which is itself a product of the recent economic crisis. The approach charges will remain unchanged. Despite suffering sizeable revenue declines, Switzerland’s air navigation service provider has kept its charges stable over the past few years. But skyguide will only be partially able to offset the revenue shortfall expected for 2011 through further cost economies. Click here for more information

Change to the skyguide Board of Management

Urs Ryf, Chief Operating Officer (COO) and member of the Board of Management at skyguide, is taking a sabbatical for several months and will therefore be stepping down from his position on 1 August 2011. However, skyguide will retain his services. The Board of Management is confident that Urs Ryf will be willing to take new responsibilities upon his return.

As part of the harmonisation of European airspace, shorter night
routes are now being offered on 115 cross-border connections. These more
environmentally friendly and cost-saving routes were made possible by FABEC
(Functional Airspace Block Europe Central), where the air navigation service
providers in Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and

2010 first-half traffic results: first signs of an upturn, despite a slight overall volume decline

Skyguide managed and monitored 555 603 civil flights in its airspace in the first six months of 2010, some 1.0% fewer than in the same period last year. June brought clear signs of an upturn in traffic levels. The volumes handled showed differing developments in the various airspace sectors. New collision warning system now in use at Zurich and Geneva

Skyguide and Flughafen Zürich AG are adopting a new ground collision warning system for Zurich Airport. The new system, which came into operation on 31 May and whose stabilisation phase of nearly two weeks has just ended up successfully, is already in use at Geneva Airport, where it was introduced last December. Skyguide and the operators of Zurich and Geneva airports are among the first in Europe to adopt a system of this kind for their airport operations. Click here for more information
