Solar Impulse just finished its pioneering mission, flying around the world in a solar plane. Skyguide, the Swiss Air Navigation Service Provider, is proud to have been part of the mission for many years and to have rendered valuable services to the Solar Impulse mission behind the scenes.
Services & products provided by skyguide:
During the test flights that went on in Switzerland over the years, skyguide provided air traffic control services and parts of its airspace for this specific purposes. In addition, Solar Impulse got served with priority at existing advantageous weather conditions despite the operational complexity.
Thanks to skybriefing, skyguide’s integrated flight planning tool, Solar Impulse was able to file their flight plans efficiently and easily.
During all the missions, skyguide provided a 24h helpdesk service to Solar Impulse and supported the crew with valuable aeronautical information.
Various maps and up-to-date aeronautical materials were also provided.
Accommodating a very slow airplane with exceptionally long flight durations in a high altitude airspace used by commercial airlines, required to create specific procedures in collaboration with the Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA) which would be valid in the Air Navigation Service Provision around the world.
A more indirect support becomes visible when looking at the Air Traffic Control team at Solar Impulse which are all experts who worked for decades at skyguide. Profound knowledge in air traffic control was necessary in order to make this unique project happen.
